Plugins sometimes need to be localized for the country you are in
One of the plugins I used in the past was created by a developer who spoke UK english. While UK english and US english have many of the same words, many are different and not everyone will understand UK slang. I realized I would need to localize the plugin and change the UK language to US language.
I dug into the files of the plugin and came across where the words were listed. I downloaded a free programming tool and with that, I did a search and replace of UK terms to their english equivalents. It didn’t take very long and I was thrilled with the results. I sent the updated English translation to the developer so that he could offer it in two country localizations if he wanted to.
Plugins are not impossible if you look into them and think about what the developer was trying to do. Even so, it makes more sense to work with the developer before taking on the responsibility of using someone else’s code. I don’t consider myself a programmer, but I can think about things and make sense of things. I was so happy when the changes were made and the plugin was more useful to our clients. You can see the BTSQ travel plugin here.
It is fun to work with plugins and make things work. I enjoy doing interesting things like this, and I feel so fortunate that I have a company that gives me the freedom to do these things. When you love what you do, then work is easy. One day I will understand things even more with web technology and I can do even more complex things. I look forward to that day.
Don’t be afraid to look at plugins and change them to suit your needs. Things are not as difficult as they seem.
